About this event

Europe At Risk? Democracy and Peace in a Global and Changing Europe

Venue: Sofitel Brussels Europe, Pl. Jourdan 1, 1040 Brussel, Belgium

Join us for this LSE European Institute event, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the EI, where our panel will discuss current challenges to democracy faced by Europe today.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Covid-19 pandemic, the rise of China, democratic backsliding and populism, demographic changes, and the global climate crisis are some of the key challenges facing Europe today - challenges that produce real risks for the prospects of democracy, prosperity, and peace in Europe. We will take stock of these challenges and discuss solutions as well as potential opportunities for the future of the European project in the 21st century during these moments of historic transformative change.

Speakers:

Niclas Poitiers, Research Fellow at Bruegel.

Marta Lorimer, Fellow in European Politics at the European Institute, LSE.

Borja Guijarro Usobiaga, Security & Defence - Strategic Communications at European External Action Service

Chair: Professor Chris Anderson, Ralf Dahrendorf Professor of European Politics and Society, LSE European Institute.

The event will take place in English.

A drinks reception will follow the event from 8-9pm.
